Traditional acupuncture location and needling manipulation rely on clinical experience of specific doctors. Different technicians give different acupuncture treatments that will bring different treatment effects. Acupuncture is not repeatable and short of scientific quantitative analysis, which limits the academic inheritance of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Acupuncture manipulation is one of components in acupuncture effect system. The stimulus parameters of acupuncture manipulation are closely related to acupuncture effect. The quantification study of acupuncture manipulation is of great significance to develop the technology and to evaluate the treatment of acupuncture. After reviewing the development of the quantification studies of acupuncture manipulation, the application of ultrasound in acupuncture and the quantification of acupuncture manipulation by using phased ultrasonic technology, this paper explores the feasibility of using 2D phased ultrasonic to simulate and quantify acupuncture manipulation. It is proved that using ultrasonic phased array can both realize free adjustments on the depth, angle and intense of focus below patients' skin through electronic monitor and accurately simulate acupuncture manipulation. Our preliminary study provides a new way for quantification, duplication and scientific assessments of acupuncture treatments.
